Musician Spotlight: Sarah Kavanagh, Indiana, USA
"Music has been a part of my life from a very young age. I started singing in a children’s choir at church at age 5. Singing has provided me with amazing opportunities to study music, travel the world, meet incredible people, but most importantly—it led me to Catholicism. As a voice major, I was invited to assist with music ministry by a friend at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. I am beyond thankful for that invitation and for my Puma family. Nine years later, I am still an active cantor and vocal music educator. It is difficult to describe the amount of joy, beauty, comfort I have encountered glorifying the Lord in song and how profoundly humbling it is to know I help others experience the same.
#isingbecause I want to share the beauty of the Catholic faith with others. Music has a way to either draw in or distract a congregation so it is crucial for the cantor to model reverent singing and encourage participation of the congregation. When we use the gifts the Lord has given each of us we become more fully ourselves and aware of how we are to serve Him. This brings an incredible joy that is contagious in the best way possible!"
