Musician Spotlight: Matt Haan, Lafayette, IN
"There is something beautiful about it, music, that feeds the soul and inspires people to do good, spark change, and connect people. It’s a universal language. Being a world traveler myself, I have come to realize how much music is involved in people’s lives. Music glorifies the liturgy; music is elevated speech. Your God-given talents support the congregation and the Mass itself."
"I've been singing in choirs ever since I was in the third grade. I have been blessed to come from a church that has a very strong music ministry, so to have that foundation in my life was very reassuring as a young musician. I also sing in a collegiate ensemble which has improved my singing ability through training and voice coaching. Music has always been a part of my life, so cantoring and serving in the church was a natural step for me. One of my earliest memories of music in the church was at Midnight Mass when I was probably five or six years old. I distinctly remember sitting in the pew and hearing the most inspiring sounds coming from the choir loft behind me, not knowing something so beautiful and complex could exist."
Matt is a senior at Purdue University and serves as cantor at St. Boniface Church in Lafayette, IN. He is a member of schola and often assists leading rehearsals. Matt helped organize a Sacred Choral Concert which will feature the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and the All Campus and Community Chorale on Friday, October 27 at 7:00 PM at St. Boniface.
